The towers of Hendrick de Keyser and the horizon of Amsterdam.

JAN DE HEER

vertaling in het Engels: Donald Gardner

“Between 1606 and 1621 the city architect Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621) designed nine new towers for Amsterdam. Also during this period a large number of monumental panoramas of the city was printed. The theme of these panoramas was the genesis of a new cityscape. The principal feature in these views of Amsterdam was its towers. There must have been a quite exceptional concern with the appearance of the city during this period. This was true not only of the shape of the city map, but of the city’s silhouette as well. The city government and its architect were clearly very much aware of the monumental value of the towers for Amsterdam’s cityscape.”
The subject of this publication is about the creation of the tower project and his chorography as a skyline of the historical city, as well as the architecture of the towers.
